This region has been entirely shaped by volcanism: black soil, lava fields, hot springs, and steam vents as far as the eye can see. There&#8217;s also a beautiful lighthouse right next door. Pretty intense, honestly \ud83d\ude09\u2026 but once we reached the bottom, I simply had no words left. It was an incredibly emotional moment! She&#8217;s gotten used to visiting the staff, who named her Mia \ud83d\ude0a. It was simply magical watching this adorable little fox play and nap peacefully.<br\/>\u26a0\ufe0f <em><strong>Good to know<\/strong>: this excursion is very expensive and can be tough for anyone prone to vertigo or claustrophobia. Despite the bad weather, we visited the lovely cathedral, then wandered through the rainbow-colored streets \ud83d\ude0a. We were there in the evening after a rainy day, and it was truly relaxing to soak in that super warm, milky-colored water. You can even get a face mask while you&#8217;re there \u2014 don&#8217;t worry, it&#8217;s normal if it tingles a bit \ud83d\ude09! The area was well marked, since plenty of people had been hiking there for several days already.  <br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image aligncenter uagb-block-45bf975f wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-zoomin wp-block-uagb-image--align-center\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/naturelfes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/iceland-solidified-lava-river-mountains-1.webp\" alt=\"Solidified lava river, mountains, steam, Iceland\" class=\"uag-image-12551\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" title=\"A River of Solidified Lava Between Iceland&apos;s Mountains\" role=\"img\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-85e37717f6a49acd1c97cb4feb657244 wp-block-paragraph\">We chose to take a short hike up the hill to take in the sheer scale of the flow, which is actually a mix of several years&#8217; worth of eruptions.
